How to do Gratitude right. Surely any way in which we express gratitude is right? But I’m talking about how to practise gratitude so that it enriches your daily experience and gives you the most bang for your buck benefits. (and I’m not even talking money)
I have dabbled in daily gratitude journalling since I was about 12 years old when a friend of mine who attended church started doing it. It would be a list of things I was grateful for and looked something like this:
I am grateful for my friends. I am grateful for my family. I am grateful for my puppy etc…
After my post last week on my Year Of Yes a beautiful friend of mine texted me to tell me that 2015 was going to be her Year of Gratitude which inspired me to write this post. Recently, Marie Forleo put out a MarieTV ep which told me I was doing gratitude journalling ALL WRONG.
Researchers at the University of Southern California did a 10 week study where they looked at three groups doing daily gratitude journalling.
Group 1 listed 5 things they were grateful for, like mine above.
Group 2 listed ONE thing they were grateful for and wrote 5 specific reasons WHY.
Group 3 listed ways they were better off than other people.
It was no surprise that Group 2 was found to be more elated, excited and alert than the other groups and less tired, sad and lethargic.
So I’ve been getting specific with my gratitude journalling, writing about one thing with five specific reasons why and I can tell you, it feels a whole lot more potent and meaningful than my generic list. I’ve had some of my clients try it too and they’ve really been enjoying the mindset it puts them in.
So, now it’s your turn. I challenge you to try it for a week. Find a beautiful notebook and each day write ONE thing you are grateful for and 5 specific reasons WHY. After that, observe at the prism you view the world through. I can foretell that it might look a little brighter and shinier.
Let’s go in the comments below. Tell me about something you’re grateful for and with some specific reasons why. I’ll go first.
I am grateful for YOU. For taking the time to read my posts when I know your time is so precious. For engaging and commenting on my posts when I know how scary that is to do when it’s all so public. For encouraging me along this journey. This has propelled me forward in times when I’ve found it difficult. For sharing your successes and wins and actions you’ve taken after reading – they make me smile so big I get squinty eyes. For letting me into your lives, into your inboxes and into your hearts.
