Accepting yourself is the best beauty secret I ever learned.
It came from the novel I was studying in English when I was 16, Bliss by Peter Carey. In it, the protagonist describes his daughter as ordinary, “and even if her bum was already too big and her ankles too thick there was something about her that made people calmer and better just to be with her.”
“She accepted herself so completely that she could not help but be beautiful.”
This has to go down as my ALL TIME favourite quote. The truth and simplicity of it struck me to my very soul. And I decided in that moment to make it my mantra.
I got out my best calligraphy pen and wrote it on a beautifully textured piece of parchment. I stuck it on my bathroom mirror and read it every day. I found the well loved and faded original stuck in my journal and photographed it above.
To me, it was the secret key. I had been attracted to the notion of beauty all my life, and with this I could open the Alice in Wonderland hidden doorway. Just accept myself completely. So I went about learning this and doing that and it still is a daily practice but it comes to me so much easier and more naturally now. I have worked on letting it become part of my inner fabric for half my life. I can not count how many times I have repeated it to my girlfriends. I am so happy to give you the gift of it too.
I can say that I love and accept myself completely. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t parts of myself that I am still working on, still parts that drive others nuts and I still have a way to go (as does most everyone) in my self development. It just means that I remind myself to talk to myself with love and accept me as I am. It is a beautiful place to be when I find it. You should consider joining me here ;o)
I invite you to write this out for yourself. Put it on a beautiful piece of paper in your favourite colour, make it your screensaver, copy the image above and post it to your wall, write it on a post it note and put it on your mirror. Anything you can think of. Tag me in it or send me a pic and it would thrill my heart.
What do you think of this quote? What reaction does it stir up inside you? Do you have another favourite quote or mantra you’d like to share?
To loving and accepting our beautiful selves,
